Catching Caerus in Washington State Trip #2
03/23/16 – 03/26/16
Day 1
Yup, that’s right; Washington State trip part 2 is here. The amazing scenery and people close to my heart simply couldn’t keep me away too long; so I started my Wednesday morning with a flight back. I happen to be flying right over the Grand Canyon as the sun was rising and it gave excellent lighting to the mountain as it showed off its bright oranges and reds. The view was truly awe inspiring.
Day 2
Started off with a rainy morning and me heading to the Mima Mounds of Washington. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any really good photos of the Mima Mounds. The land looked like it was bought and privatized and all the mounds were blocked off and fenced with no entry. The next stop was Mineral Lake where I caught the mountain backdrop. The area is known for the famous Kenneth Arnold sighting who supposedly saw UFO’s. There are even stories of people who claim to have seen big foot. Although I haven’t seen either or, what I did see were amazing views of crystal clear waters all around the mountain. Looking out into the open waters is a magnificent feeling and visiting Alder Lake, which is a reservoir of Alder Dam, as my next destination was well worth it.
I covered the Nisqually River during my last trip and this trip I learned a little bit about the Nisqually River Project. This project generates renewable, green power and is the second largest hydroelectric resource for Tacoma. It generates about 600 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, which can give power to up to 43,000 Northwest homes. It also supports a healthy habitat for wildlife and fish and has great opportunities for outdoor recreation. To take a short step back from nature I then visited the McChord Air Museum whose site, utilities and basic maintenance is handled by the McChord Air Force Base. I found the planes from WWII to be the most dope, yet I thought all the planes were awesome none the less. To end the busy day I ate at The Lemon Grass restaurant where I had King’s chicken wings and Singapore noodles, both of which were delicious.
Day 3
Was another eventful one with plenty more nature scenes. First I caught a beautiful sunrise in the Hood Canal and then I had a glimpse at Olympic National Park located in Port Angeles, WA. The entire park covers just about a million acres and would take hours to cover in its entirety. Afterward I headed to a town called Potlatch and went to Lake Cushman. That place was breathtaking. The open water and peaceful scenery pulled you right in. My drone had its first flight of the trip at the lake there and the view was just awesome. My next stop was the Olympic Mountains and they were a grand site. I truly love mountains and these were no different, it has always been a dream of mine to see mountains up close and climb a bit as well. As I walked through its nearby forests which was mostly covered in moss. The many shades of green made the place look even more alive, like something straight out of Lord of the Rings. Lastly I went on a beautiful staircase trail that was along the Quinault River. Each site more exciting than the next. After hours of hiking through various terrains including mud, water, rocky cliffs, forest, up and under trees we worked up a big appetite. We chose to kill the hunger pains with some good ol’ Denny’s.
Day 4
Was more relaxed. I spent it with an old friend from Germany, Tianna and her son Keair. It was such an awesome experience being able to catch up with someone you have seen for almost a decade. We enjoyed some time at the park playground and ate at the German Diner that I went to the last time I was here; indulging in tasty Jaeger Schnitzel and German apple pie. After seeing my friends and closing off another eventful and fun trip I headed back home to Austin the next day.
