It has been 20+ years since I have stepped foot in Colorado. I used to live in Colorado Springs back in the early 90s, when my dad first joined the military. I just wanted to get out of Austin, so I decided to take one of my favorite travel buddies, Susanna, and we randomly decided on Denver.
Day 1
Started with me leaving work around 5 a.m. to do some last-minute packing and preparation before the trip. I had plenty of time this go around because my flight wasn’t until 2:30 p.m. and I’d arrive in Denver at 3:40 pm, where Susanna would pick me up after landing. I finished my quick packing and headed to the airport. It is much busier in the afternoon than what I am normally accustomed to travelling after work, which is mid-week around 6 am. I made it to my gate with an extra 30 minutes to spare before taking off. Once I was in the air, I took advantage of the free-time to sleep, since it was my first chance I had to sleep all day thus far.
Once I arrived in Denver, I called Susanna, who was waiting for me at the airport. Visualize the fact that Susanna is only about 4’10". Now please tell me why this pint-sized hero showed up in a Toyota 4runner SUV; it was the funniest thing ever. Or at least it was funny until she started driving. Completely terrified at the fact that I still allowed her to drive and that she was also scared, made it an interesting trip to the hotel. Susanna dropped me off at my hotel in Denver and then headed to her girls night out for a bachelorette party. The plan was to meet with them later on in the evening, but my body had other plans. I ended up ordering pizza and wings, and after eating I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until 12 am. When I woke up I decided to do a bit of photo editing and worked on my website for a few hours. After indulging in more pizza and wings I slept a few more hours before getting day 2 started.
Day 2
Started off with a LYFT ride to see Susanna and another fellow Vilseck High School mate, Mae. After a quick drive I met up with them both at Mae’s house, where we started off doing the most basic girl thing to do, Starbucks. This followed with driving to Red Rocks Amphitheater to hike. Now for those of you who have never been to Red Rocks, it is a naturally formed amphitheater, and the only architect is mother nature herself. There are two very large stone structures, with one being reminiscent of Pride Rock from The Lion King. The views were awesome and there was a live band playing a really chill set. About an hour into our exploring it started to rain, but it felt good to wash off the heat from hiking around the Amphitheater. All that adventure worked up our appetites, so we headed back to Denver to refuel. On the way to glorious food, I got a call from Ashley, who was flying in from sunny California, and had planned to meet us for food as well. We decided to stop at Steubens to eat. Steubens is a diner that serves American comfort food, I decided to get the chicken and waffles, which was really good. So good in fact, that I didn’t even take any pictures of my food this time around.
After the good grub, we took a pedicab to Lodo's Bar and Grill for drinks and after we walked around a little bit, taking in the sites and people. Once that was done, I headed back to the hotel to change for a night out. Susanna didn’t make it though, because she fell asleep and didn’t want to get back up. Mae, Ashley, and I went out downtown Denver and hung out at a few of Maes' favorite spots, including Mile High Distillery, which had a nice open area on the inside, as well as an outside area with tables and seats, which was perfect on this warm night. It was a chill night out as I had a chance to meet some really cool people. Afterward I decided to grab some food from a random food truck, and it ended up having some great quesadillas. A LYFT ride back to my hotel for rest ended my second day.
Day 3
My 3rd day had nothing special to report, as it was a short day that included nothing but Susanna and I meeting up to drive back to the airport. Together we headed back to Austin with fun times and memories to look back on.
