Updated: Jun 5

Hawaii is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and hiking is one of the most popular activities on the islands. If you're visiting Oahu, the Aiea Loop Trail is an excellent choice for a first-time hike. The trail is located in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. In this blog post, we will explore the process of hiking the Aiea Loop Trailhead in Hawaii for the first time.

Trail Details

The Aiea Loop Trail is a 4.8-mile loop trail that offers moderate difficulty. The trailhead is located in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area, which is about a 30-minute drive from Waikiki. The trail has an elevation gain of 900 feet and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. The trail is well-maintained, and there are markers and signs along the way to guide you.

Planning and Preparation

Before you start your hike, it's important to do some planning and preparation to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. I highly advise you do these things, because I definitely did not and regret it a little bit.

Check the weather: Hawaii is known for its tropical weather, so be sure to check the forecast before heading out. If it's raining or thundering, it might be better to reschedule your hike for another day. The day I went it was raining off and on, this made the trail a bit slippery and muddy. I made it about half way through the trail before turning back.

Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots, and dress in layers so you can adjust to the changing temperatures. Don't forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Bring plenty of water and snacks: It's important to stay hydrated while hiking, so bring plenty of water. You should also bring snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Pack a first aid kit: Accidents can happen on the trail, so it's important to pack a first aid kit with basic supplies like bandages, gauze, and antiseptic.

Let someone know your plans: Before you head out on the trail, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. There are a few spots that are very narrow, and no way to catch yourself if you slip or fall.

On the Trail

Once you're on the trail, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Follow the signs: The Aiea Loop Trail is well-marked, so be sure to follow the signs and stay on the trail.

Pace yourself: Take your time and pace yourself. The trail has some steep sections, so it's important to take breaks and rest when needed. Remember take a load of and enjoy the beautiful views.

Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and watch for any potential hazards like loose rocks or steep drop-offs. Bring a trekking pole for better stability.

Leave no trace: Pack out all your trash and avoid damaging the environment.

Enjoy the views: The Aiea Loop Trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, so be sure to take the time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Use a map or GPS: Use a map or GPS to ensure that you stay on the right path.
